Obituary for Amy Penny (Squire)

Passed away peacefully at Lakeside Homes, Gander, on July 30, 2022, Amy (Squire) Penny, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.

She was predeceased by her parents Christopher and Edith Squire, her husband of 67 years, John E. Penny, her daughter, Janice, brothers Gilbert and Samson (Violet), sister Beatrice and close cousin Nelson (Ruth).

She leaves with loving memories her daughters Marjorie (Robert), Carolyn (John), son Ian (Kathy) and son-in-law Neville; grandchildren Robert (Scott), Ryan (Angela), Jeanna, Daniel (Jacinda), Caitlin (Braderick), and Michael (Caitlin); great-grandchildren Aaliyah, Owen, Jay, Kailee, Alyx, Rachel, and Amelia; close cousin Amy (Calvin), brother-in-law Alden, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She born in Eastport and lived there until she finished school. She attended summer school at Memorial College where she obtained her teaching license and taught grades one to nine in a sole-charge school on Paul’s Island, Bonavista Bay.

After she married, she moved to Happy Adventure where she lived until declining health necessitated moving to a nursing home. While raising her children she was a hands-on mother who cooked, cleaned, knit, and sewed. She loved knitting and produced beautiful sweaters, socks, double mitts, and gloves.
She was skilled in making clothing for her family and herself. She did beautiful embroidery and made lovely quilts, as well as a number of Grenfell coats. She was an avid gardener who grew a variety of vegetables and flowers.
She was very involved with Holy Cross Church and was a faithful member of the choir, the ACW, and the Altar Guild.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Lakeside Homes Nursing Care Unit for their kind and compassionate care over the years and especially in the last few weeks. We could not have asked for better.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to Holy Cross Church.
