Obituary for Evelyn Jane Pickett

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Evelyn Pickett at the age of 87 years. Evelyn passed peacefully away at Lakeside Homes in the presence of family on December 26th after a lengthy illness. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her.

Evelyn was born to parents John and Sarah Hounsell of Paul's Island, Bonavista Bay. She spent her early years on Paul's Island and at the age of seventeen , after marrying the love of her life Walter John Pickett, moved to Fair Island, Bonavista Bay to begin her married life there. After a few short years Evelyn and Walter joined the tide of families re-settling to larger centers and it was decided that they would move to Hare Bay with their growing family, together they raised six children.

After living for a time in Hare Bay, Evelyn and Walter eventually settled in Gander to seek steady employment. Evelyn was a hard working woman. She held many positions as a House Keeper in the service industry. For a number of years Evelyn was employed by the Steele family of Gander as both a House Keeper and Nanny for the then young Steele boys. Evelyn was a very kind and compassionate woman who gave the gift of love to those around her. No better illustration of this can be given than through her work as a Foster Mother where she cared for scores infant children in her own home and gave them care and comfort during what was undoubtedly the most frightening and confusing time in their young lives.

Evelyn was a very generous woman, especially to young children. She could not bear to see a child in want of anything. Evelyn's first concern was for her family, children, Grand Children and Great Grand Children. Evelyn was an active member of St. Augustine's Church in Hare Bay. She was active in the Anglican Church Women's Association (ACW) and sang in the church choir. Evelyn attended church faithfully until her failing health prevented her from attending regularly.

Evelyn is predeceased by her husband, Walter John Pickett. Evelyn leaves to mourn one sibling, Maryann Pickett of Centerville and is predeceased by brother, George and Sister, Amutel. Evelyn leaves to mourn all her children; Victoria, Amutal, Charlie, Lillian, Susan and David. Evelyn also leaves to mourn twelve Grand Children and sixteen Great Grand Children.

"Those we love do not go away, they walk beside us everyday, unseen, unheard, but always near, Still Loved, Still Missed, and Very Dear."
